East Asian Studies
Email Address:

I am a professor in (and also chair of) the East Asian Studies department and glad to be back as freshman and sophomore adviser. My recent undergraduate courses included “Translating East Asia” (TRA/EAS 304), “East Asian Humanities I” (HUM/EAS/COM 233), and “Religion, Poetry, and Memory in Ancient China” (EAS/REL 327). The HUM and TRA courses take me all the way to the present while my research is way back—in the first millennium BCE, with particular interests in poetry and literary aesthetics, but then also politics and religion. (You can read more on my website:; there, you'll also find my syllabi.)

When you see me in the dining hall—likely with my wife and our children Daniel (14) and Naomi (12)—feel free to stop by for a chat. We can always talk about soccer, but I know nothing about either football or baseball. Well, I am from Europe!
